When I founded Independent Australia on 24 June 2010, my goal was to build a factual, truthful, progressive news journal. One that would cover the important stories the mainstream media miss — or carefully avoid.
It would speak truth to power and focus on political corruption, our democracy, the environment, equality and human rights — especially those of workers, the poor and the disadvantaged.
It would be a champion for the underdog, No sensationalism, no fluff, no clickbait, with an emphasis on investigation.
Over the last nine years, we have succeeded in that goal. We have made politicians dance, exposed crooks, uncovered paedophiles, and turned over seedy nests of deception and deceit at every turn.
And we have done it without agenda. We are independent; not beholden to any political party — left or right. Not tied to any entity or individual, apart from our readers and supporters, who have backed us every step of the way.

What Independent Australia produces is high-quality news, published daily and freely available to all.
We have hired a professional team of editors and developed a roster of brilliant columnists. We have promoted citizen journalism. We joined the Australian Press Council and Canberra Press Gallery. We have grown in both hits and respectability.
And you have helped us get there.
IA has been a roaring success, but we have always had our Achilles heel — funds.
I have put my money where my mouth is, but I am not a wealthy tycoon — just an ordinary man, trying to make this country fairer, freer and more just. IA runs on the smell of an oily rag. Though this has made us smarter and more efficient. We are lean and keen.
In 2015, IA set-up a paid subscription scheme (while still making sure all our articles were available for free, outside the paywall).
The subscription scheme was launched in February, which means that the majority of our money comes in during the summer. This makes IA’s winter months cold and penurious.
This week we are launching our Winter Campaign.
We need to raise $30,000 to get us through until February next year.
