On Father's Day - for the fathers who have gone away

By | | comments |

On Father's Day 2011, a tribute by managing editor David Donovan to his dear departed father, dedicated to everyone else who can't be with their Dads this year.

The Son's Lament

Why can’t you bring him
Back to us?
My heart is so sore,
My soul is so mussed.

He’s so real and so close
Every night, every dream,
But I don’t shed a tear,
Nor utter a scream.

I delight, in fact,
Every moment he’s near,
For the moment I wake
He will no more be here.

He loved me with more love
Than I think that he should.
His heart was so pure,
I’m not nearly so good.

Did he lie, cheat, or steal?
Blaspheme or condemn?
If he did, then it was
Well before I met him.

He once said to me,
I can still hear his voice,
Taking time with his words,
Making each the right choice:

“Remember, my son,
All you have is your name.
Do all that is right
And you’ll never be shamed.

“Let every man say,
As every man should,
‘If David Donovan did it,
Well then, it must be good’”.

He gave me much wisdom,
Like that, my old man.
If only I somehow
Could speak to him still.

For he was the most wonderful
Man that I’ve met,
I just wish, as a man,
I could speak to him yet.
