Barrister and political commentator Greg Barns supports IA because it tells the truths others neglect to — such as those about Fairfax's former "saint", Kathy Jackson.
INDEPENDENT MEDIA is fundamentally important in a democracy for one very good reason: that you you can never have too many voices in a democracy. And when it comes to dissemination of information, what we've seen in Australia in the past 20 to 30 years is that when you narrow the number of voices you get a very contrived view of public debate.
An example of what I'm talking about is the way in which the Fairfax Media portrayed Kathy Jackson from the Health Services Union as some kind of saint over the past two or three years. Independent Australia, on the other hand, actually did what the mainstream media is now doing, and that is analysing Jackson for what she is — and that is a person who is highly conflicted and flawed.
That's the point about independent media.
