James Beattie

James Beattie is a philosopher and writer with a long career as a broadcast journalist-producer with the ABC (1970s to 1990s). He has a particular focus on the ethical dimensions of politics, and on policies relating to climate change, the environment, defence spending, public health and animal agriculture.

James has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Melbourne (1996) and is a Harkness Fellow (1990). He has taught philosophy and media studies in several Australian universities.

James is also a composer and musician whose works have twice represented Australia in the official submission to the International Society for Contemporary Music's World New Music Days (2021 and 2024).
