It was all about being rejected by big daddy Donald, Dave Donovan and Darren Crawford say, as they unpick Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate's latest foul-mouthed meltdown and subsequent sooky apology.
GOLD COAST MAYOR TOM TATE was back in the news this week, uttering foul-mouthed imprecations at an ABC investigative journalist at a press conference.
Like he was a few years back, over his Surfers Paradise Bowls Club rort, where he called a Channel Nineinvestigative reporter “brain-dead”, amongst other odious slurs.
Just like he has done time and time again, right back to our very earliest Tate Town investigations.
Such as in IA’s March 2016 exposé ‘Home on the Grange with Mr Polite — Gold Coast “bovver boy” Mayor Tom Tate', where he told a Brisbane reporter about his foul-mouthed contempt for Gold Coast reporters:
‘Local journalists, he muses, tend to be young and too inexperienced to understand life, "So now I just go, 'Gimme the question, here's your answer, f... off!'’
That article is a must-read for anyone labouring under the misapprehension that the Gold Coast Mayor is anything but an ignoble, foul-mouthed bully, whose playbook is to harass, bluster, abuse and bully, but not persuade, conciliate or even debate.
Why this – let’s be quite frank – deplorable Mayor still routinely makes national news for disparaging journalists rather than for the questions they were asking him is a sad indictment of the precious nature of Australia’s lacklustre, self-obsessed, mainstream media producers.
Because Tate’s angry tirade was another “dead cat” thrown on the table, designed to make everyone talk about the cat and thus forget what came before its deposition.
The author of this article knows all too well, because many remember LNP minister "Mermaid" Ray Stevens’ chicken dance outside a polling booth in 2016, but very few can remember what Donovan asked him that made him make such a turkey of himself.
We could say that it is not Tate’s trademark sweary attack on journalists that is noteworthy this week, but rather his apology.
The fact he made one, for a start, is nearly unprecedented, but also that his deputy, Mark Hammel, issued him a thinly veiled rebuff.
Some may argue Tate may be on the way out, that the vultures are circling, but Donovan might note that previous GC mayor Mermaid Ray was re-elected a decade ago, and three times since. Another bumptious goose who is still a foul presence in our polity to this very day.
So, what got under Thomas Richard Tate’s skin? The questions he took deep issue with, and looked almost close to tears over, related to the utter existential rejection he evidently felt by being ish role model scornfully rejected by his gangster, the U.S. Commander-in-Thief, Donald J. Trump.
Yes, Tate is another dime-a-dozen, unalluring, red-capped, shop-soiled MAGA supporter, like so many others on Australia’s wretched Right who are parading themselves in Trump’s nauseating image, such as the appalling Pauline Hanson.
Indeed, both have a similar stunted style of speaking, and both have, apparently, genuflected to Trump at his garish Palm Beach resort in recent months.
However, while Trump and Hanson luxuriate in their White supremacist bigotry, buoyed by their Union dire double-digit IQ supporters and their anti-immigrant hate, Tate is not white, but rather an Asian immigrant, having been born in Laos and raised in Thailand by a Thai mother, only emigrating to Australia just before his entered his teens.
And it is this, perhaps, that may have led Trump to devastate Tate by vehemently denying ever having dinner with him, as Tate had claimed, calling it an “utter fabrication”.
Or maybe Trump is telling the truth and Tate is lying. It’s hard to say, because Tate – like his hero, Trump – is an unabashed liar and notorious dissembler.
We can say that quickly and unequivocally, because despite Tate’s lawyer objecting to our 2020 story '50 Lies and Broken Promises by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate', IA refused to remove it, because every detail was true and it stays on the website unaltered in any respect.
What may have hurt Tate most is knowing Trump’s shared cynically opportunistic attitude towards veracity; it would have availed the President no ill effect for Trump to support Tate’s likely wildly embellished account of his night at Mar-a-Lago.
One in which he boasted about drinking expensive red wine to excess with Donald, Eric and Melania. Which means Trump did not want to be associated with the immigrant-Asian upstart regional hicktown Mayor. Ouch!
Tate was so shaken, he abused and swore at a distinguished veteran ABC investigative journalist before leaving in a huff.
Then the next day he gave an unapologetic apology in which he fumbled, stuttered, stumbled, contradicted himself continually and couldn’t even remember how to say Australia (what is an Aus-trell-ia?)
It may have given Trump flashbacks to his first days at Scots College in Sydney, a fat little Asian kid being bullied by haughty Anglo trustifarians.
All of this was an embarrassment for Tate and the Gold Coast, of course, but the Gold Coast will limp on.
Up here, we are used to being derided, and after voting in this most unmagisterial Mayor four times over 14 years, residents really have no cause for complaint.
But more disappointingly, it was an embarrassment for the nation. Tate has now become a national liability and should be deposed as soon as possible.
Though they do call the Mayor "Teflon" Tate, and with his rich and powerful Chinese backers, the chances change on that front appear depressingly doubtful.
THE REAL STORY IS NOT THE TART'S TANTRUM
Tate is a notorious media tart, renowned for being photographed with any person that enters his orbit that has a whiff of fame about them.
Tate literally runs a million-dollar-per-year media unit out of his own office at Evandale Council Chambers whose only job is to get himself re-elected every 4 years.
Head to the city’s social media pages and you will see just how much of the city’s rates are spent on Tate getting his picture taken at events with celebrities over the past 14 years.
Yet not one photo of Tate or his wife Ruth, official or otherwise, has emerged since his trip to Mar-a-Lago, with any members of the Trump family at the resort.
Not even a picture of Tom or his wife Ruth, taken at the resort itself, or with the Mayor’s Office Personal Real Estate Agent, Roland Evans who apparently travelled with them.
The only “official” picture that has emerged is of property developer David Young sitting with the third-in-line to the Trump throne, Eric, signing the deal for a Trump Tower to be built in Surfers Paradise – a deal which the Trumps dumped within a month of signing as the developer failed his “due diligence”.
So, if there are no pictures of the Tates with the Trumps at Mar-a-Lago, did it even happen? Were they even there?
And how gullible does Tate think the ratepayers of the Gold Coast are by putting up two desperate Real Estate developers in Evans and Young (Evans was the man behind the failed Chinese-backed Spirit88 building in Surfers Paradise and the Australia World debacle at Carrara) to support his story?
These two men literally lie professionally for a living.
Finally, how low must Tate feel that his hero, Trump, the world champion liar, convicted sex offender, Epstein’s best mate, and surely to be confirmed as the most corrupt President in U.S. history, has spurned him, just as his father did as a younger man?
So, for once, it appears the bully has been bullied, but not by the press, and definitely not by the ABC, but by the king of the liars and bullies, Donald Trump.
Not for the first time, Tate has embarrassed the City of the Gold Coast on the national and international stage, all because he couldn’t admit that he was caught telling a lie — again.
THUG LIFE: TOM TATE THE BOVVER BOY
A person like Tate should not be in a position of power. The following is an extract from that earlier article about Tom Tate the bully, thug, aggressor and, overall, appalling ambassador for Australia:
Tom Tate: Bovver boy?
Explaining why Tate wasn’t close to his developer father as a child, Robson tells of a “disagreement” in the mayor’s youth:
At the time, his [Tate’s] father owned a hotel in Manly. Waiting at the pub to see his father, Tate rebuked a "dickhead loudmouth" picking on another patron in the bar. "Then he started to pick on me," he says. "So I nailed him, and got him on the ground ... and then Dad walked in. He thought I was drunk and had started the whole thing. He didn't ask what happened. He just turned and walked out, and I thought, 'Bugger you, why should I explain?' ... and we had no contact for about eight months."
Youthful exuberance? Perhaps, except Tate still appears to enjoy throwing his weight around.
The Sydney Morning Herald's 2 March 2016 article on local bodybuilder Tom Tate.
Frank Robson asks Tate why he pumps iron:
The mayor looks at me blankly. "It's more like this," he says. "If you've done heavy weights and all that, and people come up to intimidate you, you just smile" – he unleashes a sample grin – "because you're not intimidated. If you bench 130 kilos, what's this 80-kilo guy gonna do to intimidate you?"
Why on earth would the U.S. president, for all his faults, want to meet a bully, a lout and a thug? Would he even feel safe?
