Robert Hamilton joined the then Department of Foreign Affairs in 1974 and served in Beirut, Nairobi, Islamabad and Brussels before becoming Australian Ambassador to Mexico, with non-resident accreditations to Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama in 1997. He served in that role until 2001.
