Richard Broinowski AO was an Australian diplomat who served in Tokyo, Yangon, Tehran and Manila before becoming ambassador to Vietnam (1983-5), Republic of Korea (1987-9) and to Mexico, Central Republics and Cuba (1994-7). He was general manager of Radio Australia (1990-2), and president of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (NSW) from 2016-18. He is now a writer and public commentator. He has published six books. A seventh, on the wisdom of Australia acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, will appear this year.
