Get your flag off our flag

Roy McKeen is annoyed about the Commonwealth Games. He is sick of seeing the Union Jack...on Australian flags! Isn't it time for a flag of our own?

When is Australia going to get a flag of its own?  As I watch the Commonwealth Games on TV  I  notice that there is barely a Union Jack in sight. England has the Cross of St. George as its flag. Scotland has the Cross of St. Andrew, the Saltire. Canada has that beautiful, most distinctive and utterly Canadian flag with the Maple Leaf prominent. South Africa has its own flag, that of the Rainbow Nation. The New Zealand contingent is sporting the Silver Fern on a black background and not flaunting their flag which can be easily mistaken for an Aussie one. No Butcher’s Apron there!

Is that the Australian flag or the British? It's difficult to tell at first glance.

But poor old colonial Australia still has the Union Jack in the place of honour on its flag indicating to all the world that while we are good at winning gold medals we still have a colonial mentality.

What a cringe!  But wait! There’s more to come. In November the first test in the Ashes series will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane and the Barmy Army will be in full voice as they chant their ditties making fun of Australia.

‘God Save YOUR gracious Queen’ they will chant and ‘get our flag of your flag.’

God! It’s hard to live with!
